Asia-Pacific: the world’s largest e-commerce market

 

Global e-commerce continues to grow, revealing new opportunities for retailers and consumers across the world. Asia-Pacific is now the largest e-commerce market on Earth, offering a diverse variety of countries with fantastic e-commerce potential.


Asendia is proud to power Ecommerce Europe’s new Asia-Pacific B2C E-commerce Report 2015, published in cooperation with the Ecommerce Foundation. The report reveals some of the best insights into six countries: Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, and South Korea.

With an e-commerce turnover of $770bn, Asia-Pacific is by far the world’s largest region, registering an impressive 44% year-on-year growth. Three of the top ten e-commerce countries in the world are Asia-Pacific countries: China (1st), Japan (4th), and Australia (10th), demonstrating the strength of the market. Interestingly, 2014 was the first year China surpassed the USA as the world’s largest e-commerce market (forecast to reach $654.4bn by the end of 2015).

The report also shows that Japan, China, and Australia are in the top ten countries for average spend per e-shopper, while China and Australia are very popular countries for cross border B2C e-commerce (31% and 16% respectively).

 

The other countries explored in the report also show promise to businesses. For example, 37% of South Korean e-shoppers have purchased clothing from foreign online shops, demonstrating that they are increasingly comfortable with buying cross-border. The majority of India and Indonesia’s populations are under 55 and, as markets with largely untapped potential, these countries could be a great next step for your e-commerce business.
